Chayavaneashwara Temple
Located in Chayavanam, Chayavaneashwara Temple is consecrated to Lord Shiva. There is a lot of ecclesiastical adherence attached to the Chayavaneashwara Temple. In fact the temple is counted amongst the most sacred temples in Tamil Nadu. Before seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva, the devotees take holy dips at the confluence of the river and the sea as it is considered religiously meritorious.
Chayavaneashwara Temple has a legendary importance. The legend has much to do with Iyarpagai Nayanar, who was one of the sixty three Saivite saints of the South. According to the legend, Nayanar used to expend his wealth for temples, feeding sadhus and other virtuous entreaties. One day, he was greeted by an old man who made an absurd request to him, that of sending his wife to him as a token of gift. But Nayanar did not have to think twice before agreeing to the proposal. As was expected, Nayanar did not find many supporters of his decision. His relatives were thoroughly angry with him, but he was not prepared to change his stance. He even asked his wife to unquestioningly follow the old man without any scruples. The old man was actually Lord Shiva testing his follower’s devotional profundity. Nayanar’s unflinching devotion was suitably rewarded.
