City Palace
City Palace of Jaipur or the main palace is an impressive blend of traditional Rajasthan and Mughal architecture. The enormous palace complex occupies one seventh of the walled city of Jaipur. Formerly built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of the Kachhwaha kinfolk of Rajputs, additions have been made to the palace complex by many of his successors.
The City Palace complex is divided into a series of courtyards, rambling gardens and imperial buildings. It is home to numerous palatial structures like the Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal, Badal Mahal, Shri Govind Dev Temple and the City Palace Museum.
The palace is now an excellent museum. It houses an extraordinary collection of textiles, paintings, manuscripts, and extraordinary weapons. On display there are two huge urns of silver, said to be the largest silver vessels in the world. Nakkarkhana-ka-Darwaza, the impressive gateway of the City Palace guarded by stone elephants, is monumental.
Besides these, the palace also houses a multi cuisine restaurant and Chandra Mahal Palace, the present abode of the royal family. Visitors are slowed on the ground floor of this palace where they can see the stunning Peacock in the courtyard outside.
