The festival starts with the ritual where ashes form the holy fire burnt in the spring festival Holi is collected and wheat seeds and barley are buried in the soil. Then the people wait for the seeds to germinate.The women sing songs praising Shiva and Gauri and they carry painted water pots on their heads.
Clay images of the Gods are also made and on the seventh day of Gangaur in Jaipur the girls who are not married come out in processions with earthen pots with hole sin them called Ghudlia and there is a lamp burning inside it. While they are on their way these girls receive gifts like sweets,ghee, oil and money.
The Gangaur Festival in Jaipur ,Rajasthan continues for a fortnight and reaches the highest level of celebrations in the last three days.
On the last day a procession of colorful images of Goddess Gauri is taken out and there are camels, bullock carts, horses and magnificently decorated elephants. It is believed that the goddess departs to her husband’s home that is Lord Shiva’s abode in Kailash and songs are sung for the departure. The girls then break the pots and throw everything in a tank or pond.
