Kailasamundaiyar Temple
Kailasamundaiyar Temple was built in the latter half of the 11th century. This temple is situated in Cholamadevi at a distance of 12 km from Trichy . The presiding deity of Kailasamundaiyar Temple is Lord Shiva .This temple is in ruins now but here you will find imprints of glorious past of the region.
Kailasamundaiyar Temple is a rich repository of historic information related to the Cholas.
Here in the temple’s adhistana and the walls you will find inscriptions which belong to the era of Raja Raja Chola I, Rajendra Chola I and Vira Rajendra Chola I. Here you will also find mention of Sankara Bhashyam in these inscriptions. Sankara Bhashyam is a interpretation of the philosophical outlook of Sankara. The inscription is mainly in Tamil language with few Sanskrit words interspersed in between.
The Kailasamundaiyar Temple has amazing architecture which conforms to the rules as stipulated in Silpa Shasthra. The temple comprises of a main shrine, the ardha Mandapas and the Mahamandapas.
The sanctum sanctorum of the temple has a Shiva Linga which has a square base. There is a four pillared structure called the ardha Mandapa also having two dwarapala structures at the entrance. There are lovely panel sculptures that are used as ornamentation on each stone here in the Kailasamundaiyar Temple. There are some stunning images here like the Bhikshatana image, which seems to be a figure of a lady holding a ladle and pots, Ganesha, Dakshinamurthy and a Krishna statue stealing butter.
