This beautiful place has on the one side Arabian Sea on the other side Bay of Bengal and on the other side Indian Ocean. The sands of the beach of Kanyakumari make it an even more beautiful place. Kanyakumari temples have their own charm and splendor.
Kumari Amman temple:
This temple of Kanyakumari is located on the seashore and is built in praise of virgin goddess Kanya Devi who was the local caretaker and preserver of the shoreline. The myth has it that she did penance to win the hand of Lord Shiva. But the celestial Devatas wanted her to remain virgin so that she can retain her power and holiness. The temple has the image of Kanya Devi which has a diamond nose stud and is simply terrific. It has such shine and glitter that it is visible even from the sea. The male tourists must wear a dhoti and enter the temple with no shirt on their body. It is favourable to take bath at the bathing ghat.
Stanunathaswami temple
Temples near Kanyakumari features another temple called the Stanunathaswami temple at Auchindram which is 12 km north west of Kanyakumari. It has a history of its construction for 600 years. The temple is dedicated to the Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva. The most fascinating fact is that it has musical pillars that produce sound when struck. It also has a 3m tall image of Hanuman. The Friday evenings feature a special puja at sunset around 6 pm. He male visitors should take their shirts off before entering the temple.
Thanumalayan temple:
Thanumalayan temple is the storehouse of the art treasures that belonged to many kingdoms. There are also the inscriptions that can be found inside the temple which are of the 9th century AD. This temple also features the Hanuman statue of massive height and the musical pillars.
