Karthigai Deepam is a very big festival in Tamil Nadu. It is observed in Kaarthigai month of the Tamil Months. This festival is basically celebrated on the day of full moon. In Tamil Nadu, Diwali or Deepavali is actually called by the name Karthigai Deepam. On this day of celebration, several houses enkindle elegant traditional lamps and radiate each and every corner of the house with light.
There is one very popular story related to the celebration of Karthigai Deepam in Tamil Nadu. It is upheld that once Lord Shiva asked Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu to search the exact location of his head and feet. But the huge and imposing form of Lord Shiva made it impossible for both the lords Brahma and Vishnu, find out the accurate location of his organs. However, to solve their problem Lord Shiva adopted the form of jyoti or say light of fire. It is believed that he appeared in this form on the hill of Thiruvannamali. And it was this event that led to the celebration of Karthigai Deepam. Since then Karthigai Deepam or say Annamalai Deepam is celebrated in Thiruvannamali in a very special style. A special torch is kindled on the peak of the hill of Thiruvannamali with a strong belief that Lord Shiva's jyoti will one day be seeable to the naked eyes.
Karthigai Deepam is observed for three consecutive days in a very colorful manner. On this day everyone spring-clean their houses and make beautiful rangoli or kolams in the front yard of their house and decorate them with lamps.
On this auspicious day of light, Lord Muruga is also worshipped. Many believe that on the day of Karthigai Deepam he incarnated in the form of six babies in Saravana Poigai Lake.
