About Kumbeswara Temple:
Kumbeswara temple was built in praise of Lord Shiva and is one of the oldest and the massive temple in Kumbakonam. The deity that presides in this temple is Lord Kumbeswara and the goddess is Sri Mangalambigai. This temple also has a shrine that is built in praise of Adi Vinayaka.
History of the Kumbeswara temple:
Kumbeswara was constructed by the Chola king and was renovated later by the Nayak King. The images that date back to the medieval period feature the ancient look in them, some of them worth mentioning are Sri Ambal, Sri Durgaiamman and Sri Kirathamoorti.
Festival celebrated:
The Mahamaham festival is celebrated with full vigour and zeal in praise of the Lord and hence beckons a lot of people from all over the place just because of the fact that it takes place once in every twelve years. It is a very auspicious occasion when the moon, Mahanakshatra and Jupiter come in the conjunction. The myth has it that the Ganges and eight of the holy rivers confers the water to the tank and all the deities remain present on that auspicious function. The month of “Maasi” (Feb-March) features the festival in which a procession is carried out and that will have the image of Lord Kumbeswara in it. The duration of this festival is 10 days. The other festival of Kumbeswara feature the Marriage festival for Lord Adikumbeswara and Goddess Mangalambigai, Theppam festival and Sapthathanam festival.
When to visit and timings for visiting the temples:
It is best to visit Kumbeswara from October to March. This is the perfect time when the climate is pleasant.
The temples remain open from 5:30 a.m in the morning till 12:oo in the noon. In the evening the temple opens from 4:00 p.m and closes after the rites and rituals are performed at 8:00 p.m.
