Madurai Murugan is the most important temple in India and is equally renowned. It is situated in the eastern side of Madurai at a distance of 100 km and is in the vicinity of the Kodaikanal hills. Madutrai amaurugan Temple is situated at an altitude of 1500 feet. It is a very old temple. Temple of Murugan in Madurai is devoted to Lord Murugan and is the religious place for the Murugan devotees. The temple is very famous for the myth involved in it for which it got its name and says that Nared muni came to Parvati and Lord Shiva with the fruit called Jnanapalam. After receiving the fruit both of them decided that they would gift the fruit to the one who wil complete the round of the earth. Lord Murugan being the competitor also decided but could not succeed and suffered defeat at the hands of Lord Vinayakar who made a circle trip around his parents that meant the whole world to him and received the miraculous treasure like mango fruit from Parvati and Lord Shiva. Lord Murugan could not bear his defeat and came to Palani and settled down here. This is how Palani derived its name and its fame.
The deity inside the temple is composed up of the amalgamation of the nine minerals called Navabashana. The deity has a fascinating visage that reflects as if it has abstained from all the worldly pleasures and possessions. Madurai amaurugan temple features the other festivals such as Panguniuttiram, Thai Pucam, Kanda Sasthi, Agni Nakshatram. Among the other festivals celebrated in the temple are Vaisakhi Visakham and Tirukkarttikai. Six pujas take place daily. At the occasion of Thai Pucam the devotees from all over the places bring the offerings or Kavadis to offer at the temple.
