Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur

The construction of the Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur was commissioned by Sawai Raja Jai Singh in the second half of the eighteenth century. It was quite a tactful decision on the King’s part in the sense that Jaipur was his capital and he needed to tighten the defense of Amer. The Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur, also known as the Tiger Fort was in fact the first of the three forts built by the kings of Jaipur.

The Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur as it stands today is not what Sawai Raja Jai Singh had commanded. Later additions to the structure were made during the reigns of Sawai Ram Singh II and Sawai Madho Singh II. The older parts of he fort have become vulnerable to the ravages of times but the newer additions are quite captivating. Located at a distance of about 6 km north west of the City Palace, the Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur provides some stunning views of Jaipur down below to the Man Sagar Lake. The fort often served as the royal retreats for the ladies of the royal family. It also has a history of serving as the royal treasury.

There are many legends associated with the Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur. According to the most popularly believed one, the spirit of a king used to disrupt the development of the construction of the fort. A tantrik (sorcerer) was approached and he suggested that the Fort be named after the prince. The command being followed, the spirit ceased to haunt the place anymore. The Nahargarh Fort stands tall as a symbol of the royal past and is reminiscent of the glory of the age that has gone by.
