In 19th century it was established to fight against the evil practice of caste system which encouraged discrimination only.

This is the famous headquarter of the 'Sri Narayana Dharma Sangham' which is a religious organization started by Sri Narayana Guru. Every year thousands of tourists thronged Sivagiri temple in the months of December and January as 'Sivagiri Pilgrimage' is conducted. Several colorful processions, debates and seminars, public meetings, cultural shows, community feasts, group wedding, rituals are held in Sivagiri hills during this time.
