The Chennakesava Temple or the Kesava Temple , which is built in the Hoyasala style and is famous for its elaborate and exquisite sculptures.
- The temple is situated in a walled courtyard enclosure and there is a gate as well as the porch. The Kesava temple is built on an raised star shaped area.
- Here on the sides of the raised platform you will find rich décor of carved friezes,which depict the rows of cavalry, elephants and scenes from the epics.
- Then there are sculptures of Gods mainly Vishnu in various incarnations in the above rows.
- There are three shrines and three sanctums in the Kesava Temple
- There is the idol of Lord Janardhana in the northern sanctum and the southern sanctum has the idol of Lord Venugopala.
- The main hall has intricately carved pillars and ceiling panels. The amazing fact is that there are 16 different ceilings - each ceiling presenting the different stages of a blooming plantain .Here in this hall once there was the image of Lord Keshava but it is missing now.
The Kesava temple is a perfect example of the grandeur and splendid architecture of the Hoysala rulers. You will also find here the names of the sculptors inscribed on their works.
