It was the famous ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali who was initiated the process of according Ranganathittu the status of bird sanctuary.He observed that the islands were nesting grounds of various birds and thus he requested the Wodeyar kings of Mysore to designate it as a bird sanctuary in 1940.
