Urs is a festival in Ajmer which is celebrated in the memory of Khwaja Muin uddin Chisti. The occasion is held on the death anniversary of the saint. It is a six day festival which is held in first days of Rajab or the seventh month according to the Islamic calendar. Urs festival is celebrated in the Dargah Sharif in Ajmer. In this Dargah the great Sufi Saint Muin uddin Chisti was buried. The respect of the disciples gives the name of the place as Ajmer Sharif.
Urs in Ajmer is inaugurated with hoisting of the white flag by the successor of the Saint. The hoisting is done with the music. During the last day of the sixth month the gateway of the Dargah which is called Jannati Darwaza opens in the early morning. The followers cross this gate for seven times. There is a belief behind this activity; the devotees believe that this will send them to heaven and not to the hell. On the first day of the Urs fair the monument of the Saint is washed with rose water and sandalwood paste. After that it is covered with a silk cloth by the successor.
On the Urs in Ajmer various rituals are taken place. First of all the disciples bring in their heads Chadar, Ghilaph and Neema along with Rose water, perfume, jasmine flower and sandalwood paste. They offer these to the tomb of Khwaja Muin uddin Chisti. Another ritual is done by the followers during the Urs festival which is very unique. They loot Kheer or milk pudding which is made in two big pans. In the nights of the Urs fair there are colorful Qawwalis and Mehfils are held. Through these activities in the Urs in Ajmer devotees pay their homage to the Great Sufi Saint.
