Yanam is situated on the East Coast of the Indian Peninsula in the Union Territory of Pondicherry. The city is located in the East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. Besides being the highest rice producer of the state, it also has other important industries like Coconut and fishing. With a mixed culture of French and Dravidian, the main language of Yanam is Telugu, although few speak Tamil, English, and French.
Covered with of coconut trees and flanked by the Gauthami Godavari River Yanam has a marvelous scenic beauty and a very humid climate. The age old temples exhibit the typical Dravidian architectural artwork.

The Alivelu Manga Sametha Shri Venkateswara Temple also known as Venkanna Babu Temple is famous for performing Child Marriages in the pre independence era. Due to this act Yanam was then known as "Kalyana Puram." The Swamy Idol of this temple with big mustaches was made during the 15th Century. The Venkanna Ratham and Ratham are the two main festivals held in this temple.
There is also a beautiful Mosque in Yanam. Donated by the French Government in 1848, the mosque underwent several reconstructions. The large hall of the mosque accommodates around 200 people to perform their prayer. Ramzan, Bakrid, and Milad Nabi observe a grand celebration here.
Catholic Church of Yanam was built in 1846 by the French missionaries. The architecture resembles the European look. All the furniture of the church was imported from France.
How to Reach Yanam
By Rail: Yanam has no railway tracks. The nearest railway station is located at a distance of 26 kilometers from the main town, at Kakinada.
By Road: District road running through the west of Ramachandrapuram and Rajahmundry connected Yanam with other cities. You can ply a number of buses tracking down from Kakinada to Yanam at short intervals. |
