Vadakkumnathan Temple is one of the ancient temples in Kerala. The Union Government under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act proclaimed Vadakkumnathan Temple a national monument.

Vadakkumnathan Temple is located on a picturesque hill at the center of Triuchar. It boasts of traditional Kerala architecture and takes pride in its elaborate murals and artworks. The surrounding of this temple is known as Tekkinkadu or forest of teak woods. Enclosing an area of 9 acres, the stone wall of Vadakkumnathan Temple is a replica of strong fortification and buttressing.

Vadakkumnathan Temple has four wonderful gopuras situated around the main shrine. These Gopuras signify the four chief directions like North, South, East and West. Not only this, the complex of this temple has three principal shrines which are consecrated to Siva or Vadakkumnathan, Sankaranarayana and Rama respectively in the center of this huge enclosure.

On entering the temple through the western gopuram, you will see a theatre hall or Kuttambalam on its left side. This theatre hall is an attractive feature of this temple. In this theatre an ancient form of art of Kerala called kuttu is performed.

Vadakkumnathan Temple is a famous place for celebrating Pooram festival. This festival is observed every year in the months of April to May. The best part of this festival is that you can see spectacular firework display on its celebration.

Vadakkumnathan Temple in Kerala opens at 3 am in the morning and closes around 10.30 am once the morning rituals are over. Later at 4.00 pm the temple doors open for the evening rituals. It is at 8.30 pm at night that this temple again gets closed.
